Sofia – the capital of the Republic of Bulgaria, which has gathered the wisdom of the centuries in its name and has recreated its spirit in the coat-of-arm "Ever Growing, Never Ageing", is a modern million-large city. Situated in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula, it is a natural crossroads between East and West, north and sought. It lays an altitude of 550 m at the north-skirts of Vitosha Mountain. The favorable climate, mineral springs and convenient location attracted man to this as early as 7 000 years ago. The different peoples and civilizations which have passed here in their time have all left their mark on the present-day capital. More than 250 historic, archaeological and architectural monuments have been aptly blended in the image of today's modern city. It was the ancient Thracian population which shaped the city's historic nucleus and it has remained so ever since. The four main city arteries of old have also been preserved in today's central boulevards. Walking along Sofia's streets you will inevitably pass by the fortress walls and streets of Roman Serdica of which Emperor Constantine the Great said: "Serdica-that is my Rome!" Spellbound you will stop at the Alexander Nevsky Square where monuments from different periods blend in perfect unison: the early Christian St. Sofia basilica which gave the city its name, the splendid Alexander Nevsky co-memorial Cathedral, the Monument to the Unknown Soldier and the stylish building of the International Foundation. Other noteworthy landmarks in the city center include the completely preserved St.George rotunda and the small St.Petka of Saddlers church. At the foothills of Vitosha mountain lays Boyana church – a genuine masterpiece of mediaeval Bulgarian art, included in the List of World Heritage. Thus, having blended past and present Sofia carried its own characteristic atmosphere and lifestyle which have become part and parcel of its citizens. Here – right in the heart of country – everyone can feel the beat and rich spirit of the Bulgarian. The famous Bulgarian hospitality and warmth is invariably present all around you – those things that truly make you feel at home.
